Pipex px® Apprentices exceed expectations at College Presentation Day

Pipex px® Apprentices exceed expectations at College Presentation Day

As part of their Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) projects, first year apprentices enrolled at City College Plymouth, including Pipex px® very own Laura Banham, Owen Nankivell and Laurence Gill, were set a project challenge!

The college class was split into 3 separate groups and tasked to fabricate a scale replica of any world famous bridge of their choice, to be followed with an overview their project findings and experiences at a presentation day held on Friday 17th July.

The project began with a team discussion on bridge selection and in true Pipex px® spirit our apprentices chose the iconic Tower Bridge - famous for its’ innovative design and cantilever section for allowing access to tall mast ships, not the easiest to replicate!

The bridge design and history was comprehensively researched by the team with a mock newspaper article being produced using the information obtained.  During the construction phase each member of the group was designated traditional roles that would be applicable in authentic companies and ranged from Health & Safety Representative to Project Manager, with the subsequent production of fabrication drawings, method statements and risk assessments.

Jon Barr, Pipex px® Director of Operations and Compliance, was one of the privileged senior company representatives invited to attend the event, at which groups gave a presentation involving full participation of all team members explaining their individual roles throughout the project.  It also reflected upon their achievements and more importantly the lessons learnt when things didn’t go quite so well!

Jon was extremely impressed with all of the pipex px® apprentices, saying;

“It was evident that a tremendous amount of effort had been taken by the team to fabricate this remarkable structure and the research it must have taken. They were able to answer questions from myself and other attendees with confidence and clarity, and I am proud of how much our team has matured and united since they were recruited just under a year ago”.

He went on to add;

”Nick Dawe and his colleagues at City College Plymouth have excelled once again in the development of our future Engineers.  I was also very impressed to learn that our apprentice Laura Barham has completed her first year with no less than six distinctions, that is outstanding”
